New league for elementary school sports

December 07, 2000

The Times-Standard

Eight small elementary schools in Humboldt County have formed a new league called the North Coast Athletic League.

The new league, which includes Arcata Christian School, Blue Lake, St. Mary's, St. Bernard's, Worthington, Freshwater, Fieldbrook and Trinidad, will be primarily a league for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls sports.

"For many years now many of the smaller area schools have desired to form a small school league," Arcata Christian principal Ron Wunner said. "We have a fine group of very supportive area principals, coaches and school boards who have given their OK for the league to proceed."

The first official NCAL champions were the Arcata Christian girls, who recently wrapped up the volleyball crown with a 7-1 record.

The league will also include both boys and girls basketball, with the girls set to finish up their season next week and the boys gearing up to begin theirs.

"What I enjoy most about the league is that it gives schools with a smaller enrollment a real chance to compete," Wunner said. "It can be very difficult for us to compete with schools many times our enrollment and this can be very discouraging for our young athletes."
